The Situation Updates of Spring Revolution in Ethnic Areas
A compilation in three months (May – July 2023)
The Federal Journal-Myanmar, on the monthly and quarterly basis, collects and publishes about public activities, movements and coordination in resisting the military junta in Myanmar. By this time, the quarterly report focused on conflict development within the past three months by examining about casualties in both sides (military junta and resisting groups) due to conflict incidents, destruction of civilian structures due to the Junta’s operation and displacement in Ethnic areas from May to July 2023.
Part (I)
Conflict Incidents and Casualties from Both Sides
In the past three months from May to July 2023, the total of 586 small and large scales armed clashes have been broken out in ethnic states between the SAC’s troops and resistant forces; about 390 times in Karen state and as second highest number in Karenni with 86 times. In June, about 928 SAC’s troops were killed and 104 fighters from revolution groups laid down their lives during clashes.
(a) Kachin state
During the three months, it was reported that 34 armed clashes happened between the junta troops and joint forces resistant groups in Kachin in which at least 33 junta troops were killed. No casualty was reported from the side of KIA and PDFs forces.
Kachin Independent Army – KIA and People Defense Forces – PDF have been conducting military operation under the command and leadership of KIA’s brigades in Shwegu township in Bhamaw district, Putao township and Phakant township, additionally, the operation has been conducting even in the border areas of Sagaing and Kachin in Katha, Indaw, Kawlin, Tigyaing townships and in Kautkai, Muse, Pyin Oo Lwin and Naungcho townships in the northern Shan areas.
(b) Chin state
Between May to July in 2023, it was reported that the total number of 35 armed clashes were occurred in Chin state between the junta troops and resistant groups in which more than 138 of the junta troops were killed and about 28 from resistant groups also fallen in those incidents. The main resistant activities and military operation in Chin state were observed a military coordination and joint operation of Chin National Front/Army and local based armed actors called CDFs. The joint forces of Chinland armed resistance have been conducting joint military operation in border areas to Gangaw in Magway and Kalay Kabaw areas in the northern Sagaing region.
(c) Shan state
In the past three months, the total of 33 armed clashes had been reported between SAC and the forces of ethnic armed organization and People Defense Forces in Shan state. In those incidents, about 36 troops of SAC were killed and 5 people from resistant groups also died. Armed clashes were mostly observed between SAC and MNDAA, TNLA, PDF in Shan state but some conflict incidents were also observed between Shan ethnic based armed groups known as RCSS/SSA and SSPP/SSA.
(d) Kayah (Karenni) state
From May to July 2023, the total of 86 times of armed clashes was reported between SAC and Karenni joint forces. More than 207 troops of SAC were killed in those conflict incidents and about 38 members of resistant groups also died in fighting.
Armed clashes were happened between SAC and Karenni Army – KA in the border areas of Karenni state, series of armed conflicts were also observed between SAC and joint forces of KA, KNDF, other Karenni based armed forces across the state. A joint force of Karenni had a military coordination with People Defense Forces from Shan state, conducting military operation against SAC in the border areas in Phekon township and southern shan areas in Pinlaung townships.
(e) Karen state
In the past three months, it was reported that there was the total of 390 armed clashes in Karen state between SAC and resistant forces which base in Kawthoolei administration land led by Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA). In those conflict incidents, more than 504 troops of the military council were killed, and 26 members of resistant forces gave their lives for the country.
(f) Mon state
In the last three months, it was reported that 8 times of conflict incidents were occurred in Mon state between SAC and armed forces of Mon which killed at least 10 SAC troops and 7 members of resistant groups were also died. In the border areas to Karen state in Tathon, Bilin and Kyaiktho which are under the control areas of KNU/KNLA, military operation of resistant groups against SAC is conducted under the command of KNLA.
Part (II)
The impact of Armed Conflict over Civilian
(A) Civilian casualty and injuries
In the past three months from May to July in 2023, about 221 civilians died and 335 got wounded due to air strikes of the SAC’s forces, indiscriminate artillery shelling, landmine explosion and conflict incidents in ethnic areas.
It was reported that Karen state stood at the highest number of civilian casualties with 107, followed by Karenni state with 54 as the second highest number, with 28 in Shan state, 16 in Kachin state, 11 in Mon state and 5 in Chin state respectively.
(B) Destruction of civilian structures
In the past three months, at least 445 civilian structures in ethnic areas were reported to have been destroyed due to the indiscriminate shelling and intentional torching by SAC’s troops. The number of civilian structure destruction were observed in Karen state with the highest number 239, in Karenni state with 132, in Chin state with 42, in Shan state with 22, in Kachin state with 6 and in Mon state with 4 respectively.
